The Chosen Nation

Centuries ago, a king demanded evidence of God’s existence. And the Christian missionary replied, “Your highness, look at the Jews”. In agreement, I think the continual survival of Israel in the face of endless persecutions is a powerful testimony of God’s faithfulness and power.

(Note: The present Israeli government is secular so it is unwise for Christians to blindly support its policies)

As God’s chosen people, they have been the victims of numerous ethnic oppressions. Pharoah, Antiochus, Titus and Hitler are just some of the more prominent persecutors. But some have been less successful in their attempts and Haman the Agagite stands as an outstanding example. He set in motion a sinister racial cleansing movement in Persia. Although Yahweh was never mentioned, His mighty providence raised up Mordecai and Esther “for such a time as this” and rescued them. On the day of execution, the Jews were prepared and defeated their would-be oppressors. Ironically, Haman was hanged on his own gallows. And that historic day was celebrated as the Purim festival.

Shifting our attention to the modern world, a dictator named Stalin had a similar conspiracy for the Jews in Russia. Right after the Second World War, he seemed to follow the Anti-Semitism of the Nazis. But again, God intervened. Shortly before the execution date, Stalin died mysteriously on the day of Purim and the plan was abandoned.

Brothers, behold the covenant faithfulness of our Lord
