Council of Chalcedon

Orthodox Christology maintains that Jesus has two natures - the divine nature is FULLY divine and the human nature is FULLY human. The Fathers saw this clearly and at the Council of Chalcedon affirmed that Jesus is one Person with 2 natures, and each nature retains its unique characteristics. Meaning, the divine nature did not lose a whit of its divinity in the Incarnation nor did it lessen a whit of His humanity. These 2 natures are mysteriously and perfectly united in Christ the God-man.

The heretic Eutyches refused and speculated that Jesus had one theanthropic nature which is a hybrid of the two. But how this hybrid nature be both immortal and mortal at the same time? Or omnipresent and limited by space? It's a contradition.

It is only by distinguishing both that His human and divine attributes can be accounted for. Failing to do so, one will end up with a mess of contradictions at best or at worst, the ancient Monophysite heresy.
