Pastor Caleb Soon was a well-paid manager in the telco industry before the Lord gave him a 'Damascus road' experience.
A mysterious health problem literally stopped this yuppy on his way up the corporate ladder... It reminded him of the Lord's calling in his teenage days to be a fulltime minister of the gospel.
In obedience, he and Eileen went to Trinity Theological College in Singapore in 1997, and studied his Master in Divinity... (where he teamed up with Rev Wong)
He has a gentle voice and demeanor, which belies his will of steel. When he has set his mind on doing something he is convicted to be right, no force on earth could stop him. (I can sense his 'never-say-die' spirit which rival Foo Kok Keong's during badminton games!)
Although he enjoys thinking/reading, Ps Caleb is also passionate about our need to passionately desire spiritual gifts... not just 'tolerate' them... even be 'open' is not enuff.. the biblical callis to actively desire and seek for such gifts to serve and bless the church... (never for pride or self-gratification)
He preached one of the most balanced and powerful sermons I've heard on charismatic gifts and war on Iraq... As worship leader, he constantly tries to encourage worshippers to 'flow' with the Spirit (ie not stand there and just mumble)
In CDPC, Ps Caleb is in charge of Christian Education (where he delights in teaching basic Christian doctrines using materials from Rick Warren's Saddleback Church). Wanting a more active role in his son Jarett's education, he opted for homeschooling... I became more aware of its benefits as an alternative to our 'sekolah kebangsaan' after talking to him!
He is also training and conduct evangelistic Alpha course... where seekers could come and explore the faith in a non-threatening, safe and open environment.
Word, Spirit, service... powerful combinations..!
The story of CDPC pastors may sound like the ancient Chinese story in Romance of the Three Kingdoms... where Liu Bei, Guan Yu and Chang Fei swore an oath of brotherhood at the preach garden to save China, but there's still a missing piece in this triad ...
