A blogger-friend who has migrated to US came over to have lunch with me last Sunday, a CEO of an IT company who just sold his company and has some time to do a project he felt was a burden the Lord had laid on his heart...
I wud like to share it with you, hopefully to get some constructive feedback tat will make it work or if the same burden lays in ur heart or people whom you know, maybe we could network and make it happen.
Here's the challenge: We find a lot of solid christian resources and reflections have been done on a lot of issues available free online, just a google search away on practically any topic today. Yet the same resources are not available for many Christians in Asia due to language barriers.
In China, the church has grown phenomenally and that has created a huge need for discipleship materials, commentaries, bible study materials, marketplace ministry etc. They do evangelism very well themselves, but they need teaching ministry. Without sufficient grounding in the Word, the numerical growth does not translate into visible influence on society - the church is equally vulnerable to materialism
and sexual temptations as the rest. Will the church in China influence how this emerging superpower will impact the world in the 21 st century?
In Indonesia, we are talking about the largest Muslim population in the whole world - more than maybe any countries in the Middle East... and from my surface level exposure, the level of discourse is more sophisticated than we wud imagine. Islam is very diverse there. Is there a distinctly christian voice engaging such issues?
The same thing is true in East Malaysia where the Bahasa speaking christians are in need of materials and resources for seminaries, pastoral staffs etc.
If the vacuum is not filled by biblical input, it simply means that the world is gonna fill it up.
We hope to start small and translate some relevant, theologically solid stuffs for public downloads in these two languages. Perhaps there are existing resources/ministries doing something about it, and we'd be happy to find out more about what is already been done.
The idea is to do something like Theopedia (an open source system where many users around the globe can spend just an hour each week on an article, and the organism grows... it's a proven model in software engineering context)
So if there's anyone whom you know like to be part of this project as a volunteer, please connect us and pray for us - who knows? If it works, it may have a signifcant impact on the gospel in this part of the world....
Expect great things from God, attempt great things for God
In another lifetime, some friends and I translated some Chinese resources from Stephen Tong Reformed Consultation into English :)
