I'm a Transformer fanatic. And my favorite Decepticon is... ta-da... "Soundwave".
Why not Megatron? He's powerful, loud, feared and evil, yes. But I prefer Soundwave's character because of his quiet competence and fierce loyalty to his leader. Although soft spoken, Soundwave is one effective espionage agent that rarely fails in his assignments. You'd never hear Megatron wail "You fail me again, Soundwave!" (a frequent complaint against the liutenant/usurper Starscream)
Again, unlike the conniving Starscream (beautiful jet fighter but whines too much), Soundwave was the one who carried a mortally wounded Megatron from the battlefield in the cartoon Transformer movie. It's a nice touch that the movie makers highlighted that side of his character.
He may not pack a lot of firepower (despite the shoulder-mounted cannon), but his weapon is more of the sonic kind. He transforms into this tape recorder, dun ask me how a giant robot can compress into a mini combo... and little menacing cassette-robots like Laserbeak, Ravage, Buzzsaw, Rumble would leap out of his chest in attack mode. Each of them is a "cili padi" - small but more than a handful to any Autobot.
So for fierce loyalty, quiet competence and honor among villains, Soundwave gets my vote for the best Decepticon. Too bad he didn't feature in the new movie, though his role was filled by that little irritating handphone-transforming robot.
