Dialogue with Dad

Last Saturday I had another chat with Dad as he shared with me some interesting stories from a Buddhist teacher’s cassette.

Three brothers drove to their 55-storey apartment and had to take the stairs because the lift was not operational. So they decided to keep each other entertained during the long walk by telling the saddest story they knew.

The first brother spoke of a recent tragedy where a building fell and killed everyone inside. The second brother lamented how poor folks were kidnapped and beheaded in Iraq. Then came the third brother’s turn… and they were already at the 48th floor, only 7 more flights of stairs to go…

He said, “I dunno if this story is sad or not… but I left the house keys in the car just now”

All of them agreed that his was the saddest story of all!

Moral of the story: The saddest man is he who reached 48 years old and realized that he should have done something else with his life instead.

The Buddhist teacher was a successful IT professional until a famous monk told him "Think not what Buddhism can do for you, but what you can do for Buddhism. Buddhism needs you!"

That sentence changed his life. Some people's life is changed by another person... i.e. a potential monk is married to a pretty woman and decided to give up religious studies. Another pretty lady became a nun because of love, she had 3 suitors and gave each one a test... by telling them she had terminal cancer... none of them dared to visit her again.

What drives your life? Will you regret not doing something at 48?
