Tolerance Redux

just some thots on the idea of "tolerance" here.

Once upon a time, this virtue means "live and let live". Even if we may disagree, we'd agree not to force our beliefs down people's throat! I think this is very important especially in our multicultural world today.

But today, 'tolerance' has a whole new meaning. It has become a dogma that
'nobody can claim to know the truth'. If you think your beliefs are right and
contrary beliefs are wrong, then you are ridiculed as a bigot and ought to be
silenced.

The irony is, these 'tolerant' folks are actually saying that their dogma is
right and those who disagree are wrong? Are they now promoting violence and
bigotry?

Truth is, none of us wants another tragic case of religious violence. But the
cure is not the 'new tolerance', which could be a brand new form of bigotry and
oppression. What we need is the original virtue of tolerance - 'live and let
live'.
