The Apprentice

My friends in Economics class have our own 'secret codes' when discussing the cloak-and-dagger world of courtship and counter-courtship.

A 'blue chip company' refers to popular, prom-queen-type girls for whom guys fall over each other to win over. The bullish demand explains sky-rocketing share prices.

We also do our market segmentations and scout around for their 'criteria' ala 'business requirements'. Tools like "Truth Or Dare" come in handy. Knowing the criteria makes it easier to package your business proposal in a more focused way.

For some reason, I used to have a weakness for the Brethren and BBGS niche.

Some markets are monopolised by a few players who staked their claim early. Normally, the barriers to entry in such markets are high. Remember the Shulammite girl in Song of Songs who is likened to a 'wall', whose breasts are like 'towers'? Reminds me of the siege of Helm's Deep... Others offer their affection in small, homogenous packets... resulting in perfect competition.

I know of a friend who's very shy with girls BUT his modus operandi is very 'specialised', in that, he can only talk to girls on the bus!! I dun make a squeak on lifts and buses, ok? But that's how he got his wife.

Other hunters like to jump out in full view of the gazelles, from miles away... so usually by the time they reached... the dust has already settled.

My modus operandi is the usual stalk-and-pounce... Risk averse players normally remain in camouflage until the prey is within striking distance.

But sometimes, I am capable of some wild things like driving out to cybercafe at 1 am on the eve of exam day or 'unintentionally' dropping into somebody's office, and say, "How come you are here? Wanna have lunch together?"

Generally we have a couple of strategies to make a project 'go-live', ie marriage... Direct cutover is the cold turkey, do-or-die approach. Prototype approach allows you to explore alternatives on a simulated environment, but if requirement keeps changing, the test-run could go on forever. I personally like the parallel run, go on multiple systems before dropping the old one! Hahah...

Some classmates are suspicious of what a 'hostile takeover' looks like. Dun worry, it's nothing illegal.

Seems to me since those college days, we're now coming to a time when lots of public companies that used to be listed are now privately owned.

Then again, there are always IPOs *laugh*.
