Unlikely Heroes

When we were kids, we used to role-play as American soldiers fighting Soviet enemies. Too much Rambo movies.

In retrospect, it's hard to imagine the collapse of mighty Soviet Union at that time. The world was polarised by two superpowers and it's precarious to think of the fate of non-aligned 'kancils' like Malaysia in the middle.

The possibility of a nuclear holocaust was much greater. One day, to my surprise, the Soviet empire collapsed without a bomb being dropped. It went down almost without a whimper, because the war was won on another front.

"Among men alive at the time I wrote this book, three had done more to shape our world than any others: a Russian, a Pole and an American...

Alexander Solzhenyitsyn would use words to strike at the heart of Soviet communism; Karol Wojtyla - later John Paul II - would inspire the first lasting resistance to the Soviets in Poland would later encourage freedom throughout the East; and Ronald Reagan would rally the West to face down every intimidation of the "Evil Empire".

"Few things have been more reported than the collapse of Christian consensus in the US and the rise of postmodern culture...

Instead I'd like to win a few rounds. I'd like the church to get up from the ground, shake off the dust and get back into the game. A lot of Christian leadership seem intent on arguing over who gets the museum keys and who chooses the color pf the wallpaper inside the crypt.

Another swath is busy organising the reception committee for Christ's return.

Still others are intent on convincing us that we, in fact, didn't lose anything to begin with."

"The Russian took correspondence course in literature, spent his twenties in the army, early thirties in a prison camp and was teaching math when he turned 40.

The Pole is the son of a tailor, who at 20 was working in a stone quarry, was still studying for the priesthood at 25 and only at 40 published his dissertation...

The American was a sports announcer at 25,and by 40 his career as an action has peaked and fallen."

Blog – an online diary of your thoughts on whatever crosses your mind…

You can use cutting humor and the other weapons of argument, but be slow to do so because these are not easily mastered and can go very wrong… The advantage of blogging is that it will oblige you to live in the world of ideas and debates, and to do so at the modern pace.

At present no great blogger has emerged with a distinctly evangelical worldview. When one does, with humor and insight attached as well, that person(s) will have an enormous impact on the world.

Begin by studying the key blogs that are currently available, such as Instapundit.com, Kausfiles.com, vpostrel.com, volokh.blogspot.com and powerline.blogspot.com
