Spirituality As Criteria

When it comes to criteria, ladies always say, "He must be spiritual lar..."

What does that mean? (Some ramblings I sent to a friend)

Say, Ken... He is the youth leader, motivated, dynamic, ambitious, zealous - you always see him in front, leading worship, speaking, announcing something and praying... he's also one of those guys who participate in the ministry team during 'altar call', we'd probably see him laying hands on people and they get slain or some other manifestations, or casting out devil etc.

Then you have Ben... Oh, he's rather reserved and quiet, comfortable in helping out with the PA system, and logistics ... content with his work behind the stage. There's nothing spectacular about his spiritual life, you probably won't see him on stage except when he goes out to hand over the offering bag but he's just a regular fellow trying to honestly serve God and man the best he knows how in his work, trying apply biblical principles to be an employee of integrity etc.

Now, who's more spiritual? Someone once told me that her dream guy must know how to cast out demons... how's that for a criteria? heheh...

Most of us would easily choose Ken. But sometimes, I think we can't rule out Ben too. We just can't tell based on what is external... we need to know more abt their inner life.

Wasn't it Jesus who spoke abt people performing miraculous signs yet the Lord says that He knows them not?

Dream guy someone who can cast out demon kah? Got one very good candidate: John Constantine.

You forget Zen, the POMO rebel who is intelligent yet most of the time is dissatisfied and disillusioned with church leaders/church goers/church-nearly-everything. He reads a lot, pray very hard, attends church faithfully, very creative, but rarely participate in church ministry except perhaps some ushering duties. He might have some funny kind of fellowship circle of his own with equally funny names (Vienna Circle, Dante Circle??). Oh ya, he hangs out at Starbucks ofen and keeps a blog. Can consider kah?

Dear Ben...er...I mean Hedonese,
You are absolutely right. True spirituality has more to do with heart than with outward appearances. As Samuel said, man looks at outward appearances but God looks at the heart.(1 Samuel 16:7)
And any spiritual girl would know that. :)

Dave, there is a general consensus amongst some of us your friends that you are indeed a great big buaya!

Yes but even a buaya can be saved by grace.

Perhaps one trend we can see today is that Christian youth are made to think that those who stand in front - the frontliners during worships - are to be exemplified as mighty spiritual ppl. Rarely would we see that boy in the technical box in the same light as that boy jumping on the stage leading worship. Maybe it's because the one standing in front stands nearer to the Pulpit while the other is stationed just beside the toilet. :)

I remember going to church (hometown) super early one day and saw this elderly Sister pulling up her sleeves, washing and cleaning the assembly hall. Watching her, I nearly thought I saw a halo radiating from her face. O' in the quietness (and dullness) of the kitchen, Bro. Lawrence found the Presence of God to be most consuming.

But let us not penalize Ken just because he is the more popular guy around..*green eyes* hehehe.
