What About The Rakyat?

I had a very stimulating talk with Chris on Chinese New Year eve, just throwing out some ideas...

It appears that there are some young grads who are more reflective may need to
have some mentoring on an issue specific to them ie christian education, politics or whatever. This group may be 5% of the grads population... optimistic guesswork.

One thing they may need is to set up such 'cohort' groups led by a mature leader on the subject matter?

Or it could be doing a book study on something that is relevant to all disciplines we may venture into later. Perhaps something on an overarching christian worldview like Nancy Pearcey's Total truth?

The reason is simple, we cant simply assume that just bcos a medical or philosophy grad is a Christian that he or she would necessarily do medicine or philosophy Christianly... That would allow grads from different disciplines to sit together as well (not a bad idea to avoid myopic specialisations)

After the 6-12 months 'mentorship' they could specialise into a field of their choosing etc... to do that, we'd need support from the existings 'sifus' and scholars...

Another thing I feel is more within the ability and resource of the Agora in the immediate context is for the 95% of Christian students or 'rakyat' out there...

Training up a select group of scholars and thinkers is fantastic... but on the ground, it would be a thing of lasting impact if we can get a mini-movement of the 'rakyat' to start engaging with their vocation from a biblical perspective.

The most fertile soil for doing that is always amongst the students, in our experience. Frankly, this is the real place where my passion lies...

The sparkle in people's eyes when they realise, "Wow, Dave! The Bible has so much to say not only about religious experiences but about practically all of life as a human being..."

That is worth all the toil n sweat.

Time spent in tertiary education should not be solely abt exams but for exploring, experimenting and learning stuffs too...

Since some of us are in the FES speaker's list, we can go around sharing the vision, basically give a biblical mandate abt thinking and living after God's thoughts and life...

It's gonna be more motivational, inspirational, CREATING AWARENESS rather than providing information kind of talk so that ppl get interested to probe deeper on their own.

We need to do this in a language that people can understand, in a presentation that is winsome and interesting, should avoid the common impressions of doing theology as something 'divisive, argumentative, dry, just talk only' etc...

Not an easy task but we gotta model our theology before a watching world. Writing this down helps to crystallize our raw ideas.

If that's something u believe in also, let's talk :)

I think Agora may have found it's niche. You know my mantra, that lives are changed through wholistic relationships and not just through books and instruction.
I will be glad to be part of this in anyway like sharing about the fundamentals of mentoring.
