Narratives In Clay

A bright sunny Saturday afternoon is perfect for a slow, "arty" trip to the Loring Part art festival and Walker Center... That's where I met Gary Wilson, an artist who works with archeological fragments, relief scultures on walls etc. It expresses a vibrant spirituality, which is also personal, biblical and sometimes, autobiographical of his own journey...

He sees that precious few work from a religious view in the 20 th century, though man has not changed in his inner needs. We all look for a reason to live, something to believe in... a God shaped void which he chooses to speak to.

I came away blessed by encountering his work on such narratives as the parable of the sower, persecuted chinese saints in communion, apostles fishing etc... Here are some samples captured on Elaine's camera

"This is what Yahweh asks of you, only this: To act justly, to love tenderly, and to walk humbly with your God" Reminds me of our two-fold joyful duty of justice and love. Can't have one without the other. Let's not major on the minor, or minor in the major. Whether in the major or minor key, humility permeates everything.

This relief depicts Gary himself working at his trade, conscious of the Potter's Hand resting on his shoulders... delighting, guiding in the expression of his work, done in faith, glorifying Him. There's an old Christian tradition, when the church bell rings, farmers stop for moment of rest, reflection and prayer. Maybe I need to set my handphone alarm clock for such reminders hehe..

Inspired by a cross witnessed by his father at a bombed out church in WW2, with a beautiful poem expressing trust in the midst of darkness, awaiting the day when faith shall be sight..
