God Of The Poor

KVBC is always a good place to meet old friends... and some new ones too! Here is an excellent summary of Chris Wright's expositions. Due to night shifts, I only managed to go on the third night and liked very much this song "God of The Poor" that Colin Kirton led us in singing. Wonder why we dun find more of these songs in our hymnody or worship leader selections?

Beauty for brokenness
Hope for despair
Lord, in your suffering
This is our prayer
Bread for the children
Justice, joy, peace
Sunrise to sunset
Your kingdom increase!

Shelter for fragile lives
Cures for their ills
Work for the craftsman
Trade for their skills
Land for the dispossessed
Rights for the weak
Voices to plead the cause
Of those who can't speak

God of the poor
Friend of the weak
Give us compassion we pray
Melt our cold hearts
Let tears fall like rain
Come, change our love
From a spark to a flame

Refuge from cruel wars
Havens from fear
Cities for sanctuary
Freedoms to share
Peace to the killing-fields
Scorched earth to green
Christ for the bitterness
His cross for the pain

Rest for the ravaged earth
Oceans and streams
Plundered and poisoned
Our future, our dreams
Lord, end our madness
Carelessness, greed
Make us content with
The things that we need

Lighten our darkness
Breathe on this flame
Until your justice
Burns brightly again
Until the nations
Learn of your ways
Seek your salvation
And bring you their praise

The song also reminded me of a bible study i did on Genesis with some new Christians. At passage on Cultural Mandate (where God commanded us to be stewards of His earth), I tried to convey to them that serving the Lord doesn't have to be in areas within the church but also in the marketplace, among the poor (Street Feeding programs), the oppressed (Kenosis Home rehab) or even in the creation (environment/wildlife preservation)... One of the ladies' eyes opened up and said she loves animals and would very much interested love to help out in some volunteer work at Zoo Negara.

There you go! :)
